26 July 2007

Friends,

Eight additional counties have been designated to receive FEMA Individual Assistance (IA).  They are: Cherokee, Runnels, Smith, Travis, Brown, Comanche, Hamilton, and Llano.  That means that households in these counties affected by recent flooding should register with FEMA to be eligible to receive assistance. They can register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA/3362.

Texas now has 25 counties that are eligible for Individual Assistance, an additional 14 counties are eligible to receive Public Assistance (PA).  That gives a total of 39 counties that have received disaster designations.  It should be noted that more than 60 counties have flooded across Texas.  This disaster extends from border to border, yet in an unusual and specific manner as heavy rainfalls target certain areas across the state.

In many affected communities local Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster (VOAD) are responding and Long Term Recovery Committees (LTRC) are being developed.  LTRCs are community specific and assist families in the long process of recovery. I encourage you to give financially to your local community's LTRC.

Over 5000 families have already registered with FEMA and that number is increasing!  Texas now leads the nation in terms of size and scope of summer disaster.  This is a significant disaster that already has a big impact on our state.

As communities come to terms with needs, please find ways to help.  TIDR will keep you informed of ways you can assist as we learn of them.   Please respond only to specific requests for assistance; communities are easily overwhelmed with donations of "stuff" (clothing, furniture, etc.) and do not have staff or facilities to handle unsolicited donations.

TIDR will also be assisting affected families and finding ways to keep you informed as the scope of this disaster increases--as long as the rain continues...

Texas is a great state, and we will find great ways to help our brothers and sisters in great need.

Peace,

Amy
