Friend:
Today we are bringing you great volunteer
and learning opportunities from other agencies in our
area.
- The American Red Cross needs managers
for Volunteer Resource Centers in the event of
a disaster. If disaster strikes, are you
ready to step up and serve?
- The Easter Seals of Central
Texas, in conjuntion with the Robert V. Miller
Fund, is kicking off a campaign to raise money
for adults with disabilities. They have
several great fundraising ideas on their website
that donors can use to raise money and have fun
at the same time.
- The United Way of the Capital
Area is presenting a workshop that has valuable
information for those who work with Katrina survivors. The
skills learned at this workshop could be essential
for preparing for future crises.
At TIDR, we are excited that we are able to pass out
information to so many different people and organizations. This
openness fosters collaboration and gives everyone an
opportunity to serve to the best of their ability.
Peace,
Amy

"I
Am Special!" Disability Challenge to Launch on
Capitol Steps
State
Representative Valinda Bolton will announce a major fundraising
campaign on the Texas State Capitol steps June
27, 2007 at 10 a.m.
The Robert V. Miller Fund in partnership with Easter Seals
Central Texas will launch a major fundraising campaign. Representative
Bolton, along with Jeff Blake, former NFL player and championship
quarterback and PGA golf professional Scot W.R. Nei, through
Adam's Golf Fitness Academy, are lending their support to
raise funds that will provide camp experiences for special
people and their caregivers.
The Camp was the vision of the Gerald Miller Family, following
the passing of their son, Robert in September 2005. Robert
was born with severe disabilities and was privileged to have
camp experiences as a child and young adult. It is an experience
that the Millers and Easter Seals Central Texas want to provide
for adults through the Easter Seals Central Texas Camp for Adults
with Disabilities program. The RV Miller Fund will provide
scholarships to send campers and their caregivers for a week
of camping activities involving arts, crafts, dancing, swimming,
fishing, campfire sing-alongs, but most importantly developing
social relationships to counteract the isolation that so many
experience. Caregivers are given a week of respite for
their constant vigil and receive support from professional staff
and other participating caregivers.
The pilot camp was held May 14-20th in Gonzales, Texas and was
enormously successful. A subsequent camp is scheduled for
October 28-November 2, 2007 in Bruceville, Texas. Scholarships
are desperately needed to accommodate the campers and caregivers
who want to come. It is for that reason that the "I AM
SPECIAL" Disability Challenge will kick off on the Capitol Steps
with multiple activities for the people of Austin to participate
in individually or with friends, family, or co-workers. Camp
activity downloads may be accessed at www.centraltx.easterseals.com. Further
questions? Please contact Kay
Klotz, Director of Development, at (512)
615-6817.
